Spam is good for you. No, rilly, it is.

Oh nothing.I'm hungry. Kinda bored. Restless.Wondering why we don't all have de facto personal chefs? I mean, is that really too much to ask for in life?

Well, I guess husbands are good for something after all. ;DThis statement made, of course, by teh perpetually single girl in NYC.

I usually just have to beg a little and whine just a little and he'll even go to the grocery store and get the ingredients and then cook it. Har. But his specialties are limited. :D

Specialties? At least he has that! And what are they, pray tell? Think he'd make some extra servings and send 'em my way. ;)

A personal chef... what a lovely idea. I could do with one of those myself. If you find yourself with a surplus on your hands, please send one my way!Preferably one that specialises in seafood dishes, like moules marinieres...*salivates*:D

ooh, on the simple side he makes these good toasted cheese and vegetable sandwiches. On the more "meal" side of it, there's imjeddera -- lentils and rice and crispy-nearly-burned onions mixed with salad (tomatoes and cucumbers cut into tiny pieces). There's upside down chicken -- chicken, rice, potatoes in spices. There's chicken with pinenuts and sour-cream based sauce with rice....Yum! :D

Well, I guess husbands are good for something after all. ;D Not all of them ;-). Mine is good mostly for scrambling eggs and heating up in a microwave things I have prepared earlier, lol. Oh, and grilling.I don't like to cook. I might enjoy preparing a fancy dessert every now and then, but cooking a dinner every night falls under the category of necessary evil. I've been wanting to try one of those places where you sign up for a session and assemble yourself a set of meals from provided recipes and ingredients, then freeze them.

And having said that, I'm off to put some dinner together.

imjedderaOMG, yum! D'you think it'd be as good (or close) without the rice? (I try to avoid breads/pasta/grains.) Mind sharing the recipe? I've got a bag of lentils waiting to be useful in some other way besides as walnut-lentil veggie burgers.chicken with pinenuts and sour-cream based sauceThis, too, ohmehgawd ... Ok, I'm going rifling in the cupboards to see what I can come up with b/c now I'm really hungry.

What's that session you're talking about? Sounds interesting? And men and grilling? It's gotta be in the Y chromosome. Gotta be.

Recipe? (And I DO think you need the rice, and particularly Basmati rice (for the flavor and texture, although you could add the same spices to lentils and it would still be yummy, I'm sure). We put twice as much rice as lentils into a measuring cup and let it soak for a few hours to soften it (this part isn't necessary but it makes it easier later). Then boil this combination. We add (to taste) salt, hot pepper, cumin, allspice, cinnamon, turmeric. When the rice and lentils have softened, meanwhile fry slices of onions until they are crispy, nearly black. Serve on top of the lentils/rice. Also on the side a simple salad of cut up tomatoes, cucumbers, onions with a vinagrette on it. I like to mix it ALL up together. :D

Do you add water to the mixture, too? Eg., if you cook 1 c. of lentils, do you then add 1 c. of water?Gawd, that sounds good. I might try it this weekend.

1/2 cup lentils, 1 1/2 cup rice, about 2 cups with water...not sure...we do it by ear a lot. :-) Oh, yes, and I forgot that we add 1 can of chicken broth (not 100 percent necessary, just an extra for flavoring...)

iunecetyahoocom said...

Oh, I think I get it ... you cook the rice/lentils and the spices with the water it's soaked in? Or the chicken broth?

railblrdcentrai78 said...

I'm sorry it's so confusing! We do it by the seat of our pants so often that I don't really remember the specifics! :D But you cook it in the water that it's soaked in. Then add the chicken broth to the mixture as it's cooking!

Excellent! I'm going to try it and let you know how it comes out.

I like cooking and would drive a personal chef nuts anyway, so would much rather have my own personal dish-pig. No washing up, bliss.

That's right you DO love to cook -- I remember the first posts I read in your LJ (which made my mouth water, btw.) Well, listen, if you're ever in NYC, I don't mind being your own personal dish-pig, if you don't mind acting as chef-slave for several hours and help me stock up my fridge with goodies.

ack, I missed the boat on this one, but now I see an error that I made even on what I had so far so I would have been REALLY frustrated once I got toward the end!
